As it happens sometimes, we became the victims of a failed hard drive on our computer. While in use it suddenly froze, and upon attempting to boot it a scratching noise from the hard drive was clearly present. So I had to shop around for replacement drive and, to my surprise, I was able to get a 1TB SATA replacement drive for $80. Last time I bought a 250GB drive it cost about $150, and I hadn't been keeping up on component pricing, so a large drive at that price was a welcome find. Best of all, things literally seem to fly again with the new drive. Looks like that other one had been having some problems for a while. Only thing that's missing now are high capacity, fast, cheap solid state drives to replace the mechanical type.
Anyways. Kudos to Apple and Time Machine. Two hours after the new drive was installed the data was restored from the most recent full backup before the drive crash. It's the first time I've had to do a full restore, and it worked as advertised. No data lost. No reinstalls. No hassles. We're back in business.
